Is there any reason that someone would use Loan Shark? It seems like the consequences outweigh the benefits.

I used it the other night to buy some bunnies. I was theoldest person at the table (26, so lets not snicker) so i didn't worry about paying it back because all my stuff just went to me!

It says that the items need to go to the oldest OPPONENT in the game, so it'd never stay with you. Still, I don't see the usefulness of this card.

I know this is an old thread, but surprised that people didn't see a reason for this card. I personally really like this card, though it's funny watching my risk-adverse wife stay very far away from it.
1) Let's imagine it's the very beginning of the game and I'm going first. I have loan shark. I immediately use it to buy up 3-4 pawns. I think we can all agree pawns are crazy useful in this game, and the likelihood that at some point I will find 30 dolla throughout the game is high. This not only gets me pawns, but it prevents my opponent from having pawns.
2) Let's imagine that I watch my opponent buy a really high powered weapon from Rooneys and they place it down and I know it's coming. I borrow some money so that I can buy some defense cards to protect my bunnies. This idea is especially compounded if I have some great aggressive cards coming up - such as choose 3 carrots or a great weapon of my own! Of course it's less risky early in the game than later in the game.
3) Let's imagine that I have just killed my opponent's amazing bunny - pick your favorite - such as a Red Timid. They have 50 dolla. I have like 5 dolla. I borrow money so that I can immediately buy the Red Timid - otherwise they'll just buy it back on their turn and my efforts will be for nought.
I can imagine about 50 more scenarios but I think that about covers it.
I think the problem that you're having is that you're not realizing that MONEY NOW is more valuable than MONEY LATER in almost all situations. This is the fundamental reason why we have things like banks that accrue interest and credit cards. And I think a lot of people just read this card and think of it as a way to buy carrots - which it is almost never good for - few situations I can think of are things like perhaps you need to buy a carrot so that you can do a carrot exchange with an opponent that has two carrots. Again, would you basically pay 15 dolla not only to acquire two carrots, but to reduce the likelihood of your opponent winning by one carrot?
Now, I'm not saying there's no risk - there absolutely is! For example you shouldn't use the card to buy the last carrot - that's ridiculous! What you should use it for is, especially early game, to gain an advantage that is worth the price.
To put it differently, would you pay 7 dolla for a pawn at the beginning of the game (with a small amount of risk added as well), or would you rather your opponent have the pawn but you're not in debt?
