Just had my first playthrough with Laser Red. I cycled through all of the cards during this game and had an absolute blast of a time. The new features and additions to the gameplay add some brilliant little cheeky bonuses that add to what was a brilliant but rather basic game.
First off, I'll give you the major big stuff. This set adds Red bunnies and, just like in QFTMC, they have special skills. They're essentially the same skills. The art for the red bunnies is great, themed around the characters from Red Dwarf (tying them nicely with Holographic Bunny, once again from QFTMC.)
It also adds pineapples. Pineapples are placed randomly in space, much like carrots and there are always 3 present. If they are removed from the game they are just respawned onto the board using the coordinates system. What are they for? They are a double edged sword. On the plus side, if you collect two of the three, you can trade them in for a large carrot card, apparantly without visiting Jupiter. The large carrot card you get is random. you roll the D10 (the set include two new carrots, one based on Ripley from Alien and one based on a Cylon) and get that carrot, even if it belongs to another player! If it is one of the carrots not yet taken then you can remove one carrot marker from the board. your choice which, even if it's on another player's ship!
On the other hand, there are 2 wonderful play immediately cards that make the pineapples explode with a d6 radius, killing anything within range. These cards explode all 3 pineapples at once, even if they're on board your ship. It's a risk. An awesome risk.
Other features include the extra 3 sectors of space which contain another 4 random locations for stuff to launch from, force fields you can set in space that players can't move through, the addition of Saturns (frankly weird) orbit which swings from left to right like a pendulum and a level 12 Beyea alien!
In terms of cards added into the set, there are 4 great ones I want to talk about. The first two are new ship modifications, Lazer Blazer which adds 1 to all your ship laser rolls and Bunny Headroom (based on Max Headroom) which allows you to launch and operate a ship with no bunny on board that may not fight in combat, only flee unless there is also a bunny on board. The other two are fun cards, one called solar flare that destroys all ships within D8 spaces of the sun and Cargo Blow which scatters all counters on board one ship of your choice. The cheeky bonus with this is that counters each go D20 spaces in a random direction and will destroy ships that they pass through!
Playing with all this new stuff was amazing! It made for a much more interesting and tactical game than playing without it. Every addition is well thought out and brilliant. I give this expansion a rating of 5 cacotrophs.
