There was some local news that I would like to share with everyone.
A few weeks ago a 17 year old girl was driving during a winter storm. She tried passing a car, lost control, hit oncoming traffic and was killed. She was driving far too fast for conditions, why?
She was texting while she was driving.
Hopefully that text was important, it cost her life.
Please be careful out there.

It was a lot easier to text while driving before I got my touch screen smartphone. I could type on a T9 without looking no problem. Now I just text at stoplights if I absolutely need to communicate...

Texting is for the birds anyway.

What's the point in paying 22c for a text when you have to send 10 to carry on a conversation when one 30 second call for 30c will cover it? Texting is money grabbing.

It's that expensive for you? Who is your carrier? I have 10 dollars per month text-your-heart-out, I could send a million texts and it would still be 10 dollars.

I get unlimited everything (texting, calling, internet, photo messages, whatever) for $30...

Texting is a rip. They price individual messages such that if you're a high-volume user, it only makes sense to buy the "unlimited" plan, which puts another $6 to $10 in their pockets (from your pocket) each and every month.
One web site I use reported that it costs more to 'text' than to send pictures back from the Hubble Space Telescope. Which is quite striking considering that it costs the telecom companies virtually nothing (marginal cost approaching zero) because it piggybacks on communication that already occurs.
Since I can use Skype and call anywhere in the U.S., unlimited for < $3 /month, I don't see the point of non-voice calls (unless it is simply to communicate very simple messages).

Mobile calls and texts are still too expensive in Australia. Am on a new plan that costs $54 p/month incl $500 in calls and texts plus 1gb of online content. $500 may sound like a lot but it's pretty easy to burn up on the rates charged.

What do you mean 500 dollars of calls?

We're still billed for calls, but the first $500 is covered by the cap ie. we pay for anything above $500. Most mobile calls are billed per minute at prices ranging from $1-$2 depending on where you're calling. It's pretty easy to rack up $500 without even trying.
